A guide to operating through Khartoum (HSSK/KRT) & introducing Sudan and its hidden gems
Khartoum International Airport (HSSK/KRT) sits at the confluence of the Blue and White Nile, making it one of Africa's most geographically significant transit points. For aircraft operators routing between the Arabian Peninsula and Sub-Saharan Africa, or between North Africa and East Africa, Sudan offers a compelling stop.
Permit Requirements
Overflight permits for Sudan are handled by the Sudan Civil Aviation Authority (SCAA). Standard lead times are 48–72 hours for non-commercial flights and 72–96 hours for charter operations. Landing permits require prior approval and must be applied for with full passenger manifest, aircraft details, and operator certificate.
Slots and Scheduling
HSSK is not slot-coordinated under IATA Level 3, but high-traffic periods (Ramadan and Hajj seasons) see significant congestion. Early coordination with the handling agent is advised.
Ground Handling Options
Several ground handlers operate at KRT. GAS works with vetted local partners offering fueling, catering, customs facilitation, and ramp services. Advance confirmation of handler availability is strongly recommended, particularly for VIP and executive operations.
Fuel Availability
Jet-A1 is available at HSSK. Uplift should be confirmed 24 hours in advance. Fuel quality certificates are available on request. Pricing is subject to fluctuation due to local supply conditions.
Hidden Gems
Beyond the operational logistics, Sudan offers extraordinary historical sites. The Meroe pyramids — a UNESCO World Heritage Site — are accessible by road from Khartoum and represent one of Africa's most undervisited ancient civilizations. For operators with crew layovers, Sudan offers a uniquely authentic African experience away from mass tourism.
