Operating into South Africa: Johannesburg O.R. Tambo (FAJS) full operator guide

    Feb 22, 20219 min read

O.R. Tambo International Airport (FAJS/JNB) in Johannesburg is Sub-Saharan Africa's busiest airport and one of the continent's most well-developed aviation hubs. For general aviation and business aviation operators, FAJS offers a level of infrastructure and service quality comparable to many European and Middle Eastern airports.

    Permit Requirements

South Africa has one of the more straightforward permit processes on the continent. Landing permits for non-scheduled commercial flights are issued by the Department of Transport. Standard processing time is 24–48 hours. Overflight permits are processed in 24 hours.

    FBO Facilities

FAJS has several dedicated FBO facilities serving business aviation. These offer private passenger lounges, customs and immigration on the general aviation ramp, catering coordination, and crew transport.

    Fuel

Jet-A1 is readily and reliably available at FAJS. International fuel cards are widely accepted. Pricing is generally competitive compared to the rest of Africa.

    Customs and Immigration

South Africa's customs process at the GA terminal is efficient by African standards. Advance notification of arrival and passenger details to the handler facilitates smooth clearance.

    Beyond Johannesburg

South Africa's diverse destinations — Cape Town (FACT), Durban (FALE), and the various safari destinations in Limpopo and Mpumalanga — make it one of the continent's most rewarding countries for aviation. GAS can coordinate trip support across all South African airports.
